Importance of social intelligence


The subject never tought at school and which many graduates have not never heard of.

Concept

The concept of social intelligence comes from Daniel Goleman : the psychologist who became successful with his book Emotional Intelligence which appeared in 1996. Social Intelligence is the ability to understand the motives, emotions, intentions and actions of others and to influence their behavior. Good leadership is built up here: it ensures connection, safety, creativity and constructive cooperation.

At this moment we clearly see what happens due to the lack of social intelligence among our leaders. In politics, it is rumbling within all parties. And we see excesses everywhere: a director who continues to tweet cheerful management quotes while releasing a large part of his staff, staff that is put under pressure without paying attention to (personal) circumstances and politicians who talk about us make destructive decisions and judgments instead of trying to get the country healthy together with us. It can be different and better. But what is needed for that?

Improve social intelligence

What can managers within organizations do to improve their social intelligence and strengthen the organization?

  1. Ask questions

    Do not stay in your own room with other managers, but dare to make contact with the people in your organization. Ask what they do, what makes them happy, what they need, what tips they have, what can be done better. Ask open questions and question more. Do not give solutions, do not go into the defense, but show understanding for what is experienced.
  2. Make aware

    You also have gut feelings yourself, those wringing questions that do not let you go. Do not leave them covered, but make them aware. First of all for yourself: what exactly is playing, what is the problem and who is experiencing it and then discuss it. Only the things that are in the light can be seen.
  3. Ask for help

    Before you look up the phone number of that expensive consultancy: I do not say this. In fact, that kind of help creates more discontent and insecurity in your organization. Ask your employees for help. Look at how many talented professionals you actually have around you. And trust that they are happy to help make the organization healthy and successful. Involve them in this process in many different ways and give them the space to come up with their own analyzes and options. Because managers do not see every detail.
  4. Vision

    If you really want to change something, you do not come up with a note, other organizational structure or agenda item. You start with a vision: where do we all want to go? No figures, no products, no work processes but idealism and passion. With what do we want to make the world more beautiful? What blood flows through our veins? What makes our heart beat? A vision does not arise in a management consultation, but can only become truly visible and tangible if everyone commits to it and identifies with it.
  5. Contact

    Make sure that it is normal within your organization to be in contact with many people. An open attitude, open spaces, opportunities to network (online and offline), meetings, learning communities, interdisciplinary projects, intervision: all forms contribute to a climate in which communication is constructive and helps each other is normal. This is how you create a professional culture.

What is fatty liver disease?


Fatty liver disease is a term for conditions where the fat accumulates in the cells of your liver. It can be caused by excessive alcohol consumption or can be independent of the excessive intake of alcohol.

There are two main types of fatty liver disease. Alcoholic liver disease, which is caused by excessive alcohol consumption. Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, which is caused by other conditions, such as diabetes or obesity.
Fatty liver disease is considered one of the most common forms of liver disease and it can sometimes lead to serious health problems. In most cases, alcohol is seen as the cause.

It is believed that about one in three people suffer from a certain amount of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease is more common in men than in women, and the likelihood is significantly higher in people with diabetes and people over 50 to get this condition.

Fatty liver disease can lead to an inflamed liver and scars. This is called alcoholic hepatitis if it is caused by drinking too much alcohol and non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) if it is not caused by alcohol.
Both conditions can eventually lead to cirrhosis, which can be life-threatening. Fatty liver disease can also lead to liver cancer.

Symptoms of fatty liver disease


Fatty liver disease often has no symptoms, especially when it occurs in a mild form. However, you may feel tired, or have pain and discomfort in the area where your liver is - on the right side of your body just below your ribs.

This pain is caused by a growing amount of fat in your liver, causing it to expand, resulting in the stretching of the sensitive membrane that covers your liver.

If fatty liver disease progresses, your liver may become scarred and develop cirrhosis. If you begin to develop cirrhosis, you will see other symptoms such as:

  • a swollen belly (abdomen)
  • itchy skin
  • vomiting and vomiting blood
  • confusion or bad memory
  • yellow eye-white and yellow skin (jaundice)

Complications of fatty liver disease


There are different stages of fatty liver disease. The first phase is where the fat accumulates in the liver, without inflammation or scarring. For many people, the condition will not be worse than this and severe liver disease will not develop.

Approximately one in 20 people who develop liver inflammation due to fatty liver disease is associated with severe liver problems such as cirrhosis, liver cancer or the development of liver failure. All these conditions are life-threatening.

If you develop cirrhosis, even with treatment, it is unlikely that your liver will return to a normal condition. However, the treatment can prevent the condition from getting worse.

Causes of fatty liver disease


There are a number of things that can cause fatty liver disease. The two most important are:

  • drinking too much alcohol
  • being overweight or obese - this makes it more likely that you will get conditions such as diabetes or high triglycerides, both of which can also lead to a condition of fatty liver.

There are other things that can cause fatty liver disease, including some medications and rapid weight loss , but these are less common.

Acute liver fatigue is a very rare complication that can develop during the last three months of pregnancy. It can lead to liver failure if it is not treated quickly.

If you are pregnant and develop symptoms such as abdominal pain, vomiting and yellow whites of the eyes and yellow skin, you should contact your doctor immediately.

Diagnosis of fatty liver disease


Your doctor will ask you questions about your complaints and examine you. He or she can also ask you about your medical history. It is important to be honest about your lifestyle and the amount of alcohol you drink, as this will help your doctor to come to the correct diagnosis.

Fatty liver disease can sometimes be difficult to diagnose because you may not have developed obvious symptoms.

Build up resilience? 10 ways to get more (mental) space in your life.



If you are in a difficult period, you always hear or read: "head on, after rain comes sunshine", or adversity makes you grow as a person, so you get stronger out of it ". But if you are in such a difficult phase, those sayings don't help much. Somewhere you know that there is a truth in it, but for you these are hollow sentences at that moment.

I have gone trough a number of my personal crises earlier in my life. What I learn from this is that every crisis has always made me stronger as a human being. But again, these words do not help you much as you are in a difficult period.

In such a difficult moment in your life, where you feel that the resilience in your life is completely lost, everything you do seems to be counterproductive.
While everyone seems to enjoy, you yourself view everything through dark glasses. Strangely enough, those things that you used to enjoy are no longer fun.
Going somewhere seems almost impossible. It is as if everything attracts you to stay at home and preferably just lie in your bed.
Moreover, you develop a fear that people will notice that you feel so bad and will condemn you for that.

You may have already tried a lot. But the harder you try, the harder it gets.
Once you have lost all the joy in your life, it is normal for you to wonder if life still makes sense.

And then you have the choice: drowning (being overwhelmed by all those negative thoughts and emotions) or repressing (and not feeling anything anymore). However, The best thing to do is to confront your situation and make a conscious choice to work on yourself. To increase your resilience by doing things that seem banal at first sight. But it works.

How to rebuild and strengthen your resilience?

Building resilience is not something you need to do immediately in a difficult phase of your life. But it is often the trigger to start with. Someone who feels good about himself/herself often does not think about doing "something" to be able to cope better in times of crisis. 10 things you can already do to help you increase your resilience.

1. Create TIME
Make space and time for people you like. And then I am NOT talking about the "energy vampires" in your life, but those people who give you energy. That can be friends or family, but that can also be neighbors, or people in your sports club.

2. POSITIVE mindset
Put on positive glasses instead of the known negative glasses. The way we look at the world is also how we experience the world. A change in your view point will also mean a change in how you experience things. Research also shows that people who (consciously) think, think out many more possibilities in life than people who pay attention to negative thoughts.

3. ACCEPT change
Accept that change belongs to life. If we like something, we want more of it. If we do not like something, we push it away. But the point is that everything is constantly changing, whether we like it or not. Accepting that constant flow of change, that does give extra space.

4. Step FORWARD
Develop a number of challenging, achievable goals for yourself and then take steps towards that goal. Being "on the road" will also provide extra resilience in your life.

5. CARE for yourself
Be kind to yourself and develop a loving kindness for yourself. You do not (always) have to strive. You do not have to change. You are good as you are.

6. SPACE
Clean up. Yes, you read that right. You probably know the feeling after you have cleaned up the dresser. Clearing gives literally and figuratively extra space, also mental space and resilience.

7. MOVE
Bring movement into your life. You can take this again literally and figuratively. Go exercise (and yes, walking is also a sport) and feel how that movement in your body generates a flow of energy. And also bring movement into your life yourself if you feel stuck: change work, relationship, home, ... if that's good for you.

8. EAT & DRINK
Healthy eating and drinking.
Well, ... you already knew that?

9. DO a CARING DEED
Do small loving things for others (without them being aware of it). Sending a card to a friend ... just like that. Not only the recipient will be affected, but you too.

10. Do NOTHING
Perhaps the last bit of a strange tip. But know that it is also OK to do NOTHING. Your life should not be full of "doing things". Put a break once in a while, that will help you put a break on your pattern of life so that other opportunities can arise.
